Frequently Asked Questions

Newborns stay new for such a short amount of time, and I love to capture all of the special details of your sweet little one before they begin to change.

When should I call to schedule my newborn session?
Before your baby is born! It is so important to plan ahead. Capturing your newborn within the first two weeks of life, while they are still sleepy and curled up, can make all the difference in your newborn portraits. My schedule fills up about four weeks in advance, so please call to schedule your newborn appointment before your baby is born especially during the summer and fall wedding season! Since we never really know when your little one will arrive, I will put you on my calendar to hold a spot for you. When your baby is born, we will move your appointment accordingly. If your baby comes early or if your baby is already born, don’t panic! We always do our best to squeeze newborns into our schedule. Plus, older babies take beautiful portraits, too!

Is one week old too early for my newborn session?
Absolutely not! Newborn babies photograph best between 4-14 days old. At this point, they are still very sleepy and like to curl up as if they were still in the womb. I take at least 2 hours for a newborn session and leave plenty of time for feedings, diaper changes, and breaks for mommy and baby. Come as soon as you are ready, I can’t wait to meet your new little one!

What should my baby wear?

Newborns photograph best without any clothes at all or just a simple diaper cover. I love to photograph newborns swaddled in blankets with lots of texture and snuggled up tight in buckets and baskets, so if you have a special blanket or two, please bring them! I also recommend that you bring diaper covers for baby and plenty of diapers and wipes. We will coordinate colors and outfits together. I tend to photograph with a more simplistic and organic vibe but am always willing to follow your special request! You are welcome to bring any hats or props that you would like to have the baby photographed in. I encourage my clients to bring special personal items, which make the session and images especially meaningful.

How should I prepare for my newborn session?
I recommend that you bring your baby to the session after an hour to two of keeping your baby up and awake. This will ensure that your baby will be in a deep sleep when arriving at the studio.  Sleepy babies photograph perfectly, so I will ask you to undress and swaddle your baby before the feeding so as to not disturb them by undressing them afterwards. If needed, we take several breaks for feeding your baby during the session to ensure that your baby is happy and has a full tummy. I ask that you not be too concerned with scheduled feedings during the session and that you feed your baby on demand (or when they get a bit fussy) to ensure their comfort and a smooth session. Also know that it will be very toasty in the studio to keep baby nice and cozy! So please dress accordingly and warn your significant other.

Can I be photographed with my baby?
Absolutely! I wouldn’t have it any other way! I love capturing the emotion of those special first days with your new little one and I believe that there is no greater image than a new mommy or daddy cuddling and admiring their newborn. Mom’s should wear naturally toned clothing such as brown, golden, gray, off-white, or cream. Soft pastels will work, too. Skin on skin images are also a unique way to capture the purity of these relationships. Black can be an option as well. I photograph the parents with the baby first so then you can relax while I work my magic.

Your time in my studio
Creating a beautiful experience is my main goal for you. Patience is what I go by. I just adore every sweet baby and family that walk through my door. With that said, newborn sessions take a lot of time and patience. If your baby tends to be awake a lot, we will go with the flow! If your baby isn't have a good day we will work together to get your baby happy again! I will not let you leave until I know we have captured the most precious photos of your little one and family. I provide beverages and snacks and a cozy area for you to relax in while I capture your sweet baby. I want you to enjoy this time and also enjoy the break!
